Once again, Maruti Suzuki India claimed the top spot as the country’s car manufacturer, with total sales of 1,80,077 units in May 2025, representing a 3.2% year-on-year growth. However, they struggled to meet demand in the domestic market.
Sales Record Decline
Diligent’s domestic sales figure, which includes passenger vehicles and light commercial vehicles, is pegged at 138,690 units in May 2025, representing a year-over-year decline of 5.5%. The company’s passenger vehicle segment alone witnessed a 5.6% drop in sales volume, with 1,35,962 units sold compared to 1,44,002 units in May 2024. The flagship mini compact also bore the brunt, witnessing colossal year-on-year declines of 31.5% and 9.6%, respectively. Several mid-size sedans, including the Ciaz, have also dipped, while the utility vehicles (Brezza, Ertiga, Fronx, Grand Vitara, XL6, Invicto, Jimny) saw a minor uptick. The Eeco van performed strongly, benefiting from a 12.5% YoY increase in sales.
Exports Performed Wonderfully
Maruti Suzuki’s export figures for May 2025 soared to 31,219 from the previous 17,367 units, indicating an astonishing 80% increase. This surge in exports significantly aided the company’s sales for the month, resulting in a positive overall performance.

Projection
The Utility Vehicles Sector achieved a noteworthy milestone, having recorded a slight increase in sales compared to the previous year. Furthermore, Maruti Suzuki’s management highlighted stagnation in the smaller domestic cars segment but is looking forward to new launches in the core region, along with the onset of the monsoon season, which is encouraging overall optimism.
This strong growth in exports maintains Maruti Suzuki’s market dominance, asserting its position as the top automobile manufacturer in India.
Context Of The Industry
Though Maruti weaved through each obstacle seamlessly, other major competitors had a hard time keeping up with them. Tata Motors and Hyundai saw a decline in domestic sales, while Mahindra and Kia were able to shift the momentum into something positive. The market as a whole is still experiencing a rollercoaster of fluctuations in terms of consumer wants and market standards.
Even though the company faced difficulties related to the domestic market, Maruti Suzuki remained at the top of the automotive industry in India for May 2025, thanks to considerable exports that surpassed industry expectations.
