Volkswagen Tayro
Volkswagen is planning to expand its premium SUV offering in India, as the 7-seater Volkswagen Tayron R-Line is undergoing its first set of road tests. The appearance of this uncamouflaged test mule strongly indicates that Volkswagen is preparing the Tayron for a release in India in late 2025, presumably as a replacement for the Tiguan Allspace, which is no longer in production.
Design and Dimensions
The Volkswagen Tayron is a three-row SUV that derives much of its design from the recently introduced Tiguan R-Line. The test vehicle had sleek LED headlights, a bold black grille, and a large air intake with a mesh design in prominence. Tayron also comes equipped with slimmer LED light bars that feature distinct signatures, which set them apart from the rear lights on the Tiguan. The SUV rides on 19-inch alloy wheels and flaunts R-Line badges, which signal its sporty and upper-class positioning.
The Tayron and the Tiguan R-Line differ considerably in terms of size. The Tayron has a longer wheelbase of 2,791 mm, surpassing the Tiguan R-Line’s 2,681 mm. Thus, the Tayron offers more space in the cabin, including a third row of seating. Boot capacity is set to be 345 litres with all seats up, expanding to 850 litres when the third row is folded down, making it practical for families.
Expected Features and Interior
As the interior remains under wraps, the Tayron is anticipated to adopt the Tiguan R-Line’s chic modern dash with no buttons. Other expected features include a 15-inch infotainment touchscreen, a 10.25-inch all-digital instrument cluster, interior ambient lighting, a panoramic sunroof, wireless phone charging, three-zone climate control, and Level 2 Advanced Driving Assistance Systems for further safety and convenience.
Powertrain and Performance Features
The Volkswagen Tayron for the Indian region may be equipped with the same 2.0-litre turbo-petrol engine used in the Tiguan R-Line and Skoda Kodiaq. This engine is capable of 204 hp with 320 Nm of torque and comes with a 7-speed dual-clutch automatic gearbox and AWD. While some decline in performance relative to the Tiguan R-Line is anticipated due to the Tayron’s larger size, it is still expected to provide brisk acceleration with refined manners on the highways.
Market Positioning and Rivals
With the VW Tayron, Volkswagen will once again enter the 3-row premium SUV segment in India. It should come off the production line as a completely knocked-down unit (CKD), which means that it will be marketed above the Tiguan R-Line and priced higher than it. Once launched, Skoda’s competitors will face established competitors, which include the Kodiaq, Fortuner by Toyota, MG’s Gloster, and Meridian from Jeep.
Estimated launch date
Volkswagen is expected to use the newfound buzz to launch the car in late 2025 in India. The test mule’s appearance on Indian roads suggests that preparations are more advanced than predicted, despite the lack of public information regarding the launch date or pricing.
In the tail end: The Volkswagen Tayron R-Line’s driving tests in India are an obvious sign of the brand wanting to add a lavish, roomy, 7-seater SUV to its lineup. The Tayron R-Line has a luxurious design, modern tech features, and a reliable engine, making it one of the frontrunners in the SUV segment in India.
